Panama’s Free Tourist Insurance Sounds Great
Here Is What It Really Covers
Eligible travelers who fly into Panama now receive 10 days of free tourist insurance. It is useful arrival protection — but it is not a full travel policy, and many long-stay visitors will need more.

Here is the part travelers need to know: Panama now gives eligible air arrivals a free tourist-insurance benefit for their first 10 days in the country. The program is active. It does not require a sign-up or payment before your flight.
That is good news for tourists. It is also easy to misunderstand. The benefit is not a blank check, it does not cover every health problem, and it ends after 10 days. If you are staying for a month to test Panama as a future home, this is only the first part of your plan.
Who Gets the Free Insurance?
The official Visit Panamá page says the benefit is automatic for travelers under age 86 who enter Panama by air through one of the approved airports. It also covers Panamanians who live abroad when they can show proof of residence outside Panama.
The six listed airports are Tocumen International in Panama City, Panamá Pacífico, Enrique Malek in Chiriquí, Scarlett Martínez in Río Hato, Enrique Adolfo Jiménez in Colón, and José Ezequiel Hall on Isla Colón in Bocas del Toro.
Arriving by land or sea does not qualify. That means a land crossing from Costa Rica and a cruise or boat arrival are outside this specific program.
What Does It Cover?
The official pages list medical and hospital care for accidents or sudden illnesses that are not pre-existing. The program also includes medical transfers, international repatriation, legal help after theft or an accident, and 24/7 assistance in several languages, including English.
The current official assistance channels are +507 840-4585 by phone, WhatsApp at +1 305 722-5824, and [email protected] by email. Save them before you need them.
What It Does Not Cover
Pre-existing health problems
Visit Panamá says chronic, congenital, and pre-existing conditions are excluded. The program is designed for unexpected accidents and sudden illnesses during the trip. Do not assume it replaces coverage for a condition you already manage.
Every cost is not automatically paid
Coverage is subject to the program’s terms and limits. A headline number is not the same as unlimited medical care. The official insurer tells travelers to review the current coverage guide and general conditions.
It does not last your whole stay
The free benefit lasts for the first 10 days. A long weekend and a 10-day holiday fit inside that window. A 30- to 90-day scouting trip for Boquete, Coronado, David, or Panama City does not.
It is not a visa or entry shortcut
The insurance is a travel benefit. It does not change visa rules, allowed stay periods, passport requirements, or immigration decisions. Check official entry rules for your passport before you fly.
What Should Long-Stay Visitors Do?
If you are coming to Panama for more than 10 days, treat the free program as a helpful first layer. Ask the insurer whether an extension is available, as the official insurance site says longer stays may be extended. Also compare a separate travel-medical policy before you leave home.
People with chronic conditions, older travelers, and anyone planning remote trips should pay special attention to exclusions, evacuation, and access to care outside Panama City. The U.S. State Department warns that medical care is not free and recommends supplemental insurance for medical evacuation. Your own government may have different guidance, so check it too.
Why This Matters for People Testing Panama as a Home
Many future expats do not visit for a week. They stay long enough to compare neighborhoods, rent a car, view apartments, test internet, and see what daily life feels like. That is smart. It also means the free 10-day benefit may end while you are still deciding whether Panama fits.
Before you book a longer stay, write down your arrival date, your coverage end date, your current health needs, and your plan for care after day 10. Simple preparation is better than finding the fine print during an emergency.
The Bottom Line
Panama’s free tourist insurance is a real benefit for eligible air arrivals. It starts automatically after entry, covers the first 10 days, and includes useful medical and assistance services.
Use it as a helpful arrival safety net, not as your only plan. Check the approved airport list, save the assistance contacts, read the exclusions, and arrange extra coverage if you will stay past day 10 or have needs the program does not cover.
